homemade Fluoride Free toothpaste

I quit using toothpaste containing fluoride about 9 years ago but just continued buying expensive herbal fluoride-free toothpaste for the following years. I was just too lazy to have a go at making my own. About six months ago I finally tried, and its dead simple, takes very little time and works out far less expensive than the health store stuff.

Why Make It Yourself?
  • Coconut oil is antiseptic, kills bacteria in the mouth.
  • Bicarbonate of soda is also antiseptic and can be used to stop bleeding gums.
  • You know exactly what ingredients are in your toothpaste.
  • Best of all, no fluoride.

All you need:
  • I use a little glass jar that measures about 100ml, it has a resealable plastic cap, but I’m sure you could use a standard screw cap.
  • Coconut oil (€8 lasting 3 jars)
  • Baking Soda / Baking Powder (30+ jars)
  • Peppermint Oil (Make sure this is ingestible, most are not. €8 should last about 10+ jars)

The Process
  • Warm some water in a pot.
  • Place your empty jar half submerged in the water.
  • Spoon in the solid coconut oil to near fill the jar, let it melt.
  • Stir in one teaspoon of baking powder.
  • Stir in five or six drops of peppermint oil.
  • Mix until cloudy watery liquid.

These need not be exact measurements, you can taste the mix and play around. You’ll end up with a cloudy oily liquid.

Final Steps
  • Place in the fridge upside down for 10 minutes
  • Remove give a good shake to dislodge the baking soda collected under the lid.
  • Place back in the fridge for a few more minutes.
  • Remove when you start to see it set around the sides of the jar.
  • Stir as it sets to keep the baking soda evenly spread throughout the toothpaste.
  • Taste to see if you want to add more peppermint.
  • If you’re in a warm country the oil might not set, so would be best in a cool room or kept in the fridge.

 

This is a basic mix and flavour, you can obviously vary the amount of peppermint you want, or skip it altogether or add lemon or orange oil or dried rind to change up the taste or you can add Stevia, an alternative sweetener to sugar. Enjoy. Homemade Fluoride Free Toothpaste
